How does the Minister ensure that all creative bodies funded by the Welsh Government pay their freelancers and content creators a fair wage?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip | Answered on 04/05/2023

Grants from the Welsh Government to creative bodies are awarded in line with standard conditions of grant. These cover requirements to comply with legal obligations, such as those related to pay and equality. Use of funding must also contribute to the achievement of the Welsh Government’s well-being objectives, including the objective to ‘Build an economy based on the principles of fair work, sustainability and the industries and services of the future’.

In addition, we expect organisations in receipt of Creative Wales production funding to operate in a responsible manner and all businesses applying for funding from Creative Wales will be expected to sign up to our high-level funding principles in the form of an Economic Contract and its associated fair work pillar.

Creative Wales is exploring options to further improve working conditions in the sector following the publication of the creative industries Policy and Evidence Centre’s report on its review of working practices in the creative industries.
