What assessment has the Minister made of the adequacy of single-sex toilet provision in schools?
The Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999 specify separate washrooms for male and female pupils over the age of 8. Gender-neutral toilets can be provided alongside single-sex toilets.
The provision and design of toilets, changing rooms and washing facilities for pupils is a matter for the school and local authority. Schools conducting a school-based consultation with learners will help ensure the needs of all pupils are met within new buildings and in making any changes to provision.
