What is the Welsh Government doing to enhance the role of saltmarshes in future emissions reduction?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 09/02/2023

Welsh Government is working with partners across the UK to establish the mitigation potential of blue carbon to enable the future inclusion of saltmarsh and seagrass in the UK GHG Inventory, an important step in accounting for and therefore driving emissions reduction.

Although not designated for them, many blue carbon habitats are already protected through Wales’s extensive Marine Protected Area (MPA) network. The Welsh Government MPA Management programme has included research to improve the management of seagrass and saltmarsh habitats in Wales, leading to awareness raising with sea users, incorporating advice into marine codes of conduct, and seeking opportunities to restore Welsh saltmarsh habitats through the Nature Networks Fund.

I have committed to establishing a coastal habitats restoration scheme this Senedd term and work has begun with our partners to identify the opportunities and build our evidence base.
