What assessment has Welsh Government undertaken into the number of retiring GPs in Mid and West Wales?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 03/02/2023

A framework for primary care workforce planning has been developed to enable our health boards and clusters to effectively plan for a sustainable workforce across their practices. It supports them to prepare for future changes and identify and plan for workforce gaps.

Due to investment in the development of the Wales National Workforce Reporting System, health boards and clusters now have the data needed to better  understand the General Practice workforce and are able to more accurately project the workforce of the future.

Data is validated and made available quarterly to the wider public on StatsWales or via statistical bulletin. The data showing GP age bands by health board area can be found here: Fully qualified GPs (headcount) by age band and local health board (gov.wales)
