Will the Minister outline how the Curriculum for Wales will educate young people on rural affairs and encourage entry into the rural sector?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 26/01/2023

The Curriculum for Wales framework has been developed to provide schools with the flexibility to develop a curriculum that meets the needs of learners in their local and national contexts, including rural and agricultural affairs. Learners should also be grounded in an understanding of the identities, landscapes and histories that come together to form their cynefin.

Officials in the Welsh Government Education Directorate have a long-standing engagement with the NFU Cymru, which has led to the publication of a number of resources and Careers and Work-Related Experiences materials to support schools engage with farming related topics in the context of meaningful cross-curricular tasks, with the aims and objectives of the Curriculum for Wales in mind.

This ensures that schools in rural areas can develop curricula that reflect:

  • the services, experiences and opportunities which are readily accessible in and unique to rural areas
  • the local needs and issues that may affect learners in rural communities.

We continue to engage with NFU Cymru to ensure that new material produced by them is available on Hwb and prove to be valuable resources for teachers to use with their learners.
