Has the First Minister undertaken an assessment to determine whether his decision to visit Qatar is in alignment with the Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 commitment to a globally responsible Wales?

Our commitment to a globally responsible Wales has been at the centre of our decision making around the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Future Generations Act well-being goal states Wales will be “A nation which, when doing anything to improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales, takes account of whether doing such a thing may make a positive contribution to global well-being”. In this instance, and after continuous careful consideration, Welsh Government believes ministerial attendance and our programme of activity around the games will make that contribution and allow us to project our values. We will promote a Wales that is open, welcoming and on the side of those striving for social justice on a healthier planet.

The Welsh Government has also welcomed the Team Wales stakeholder values statement, facilitated by Wales Centre for International Affairs and the Future Generations Commissioner.  We will add our voice and work together with stakeholders to promote the values of inclusivity and respect for human and workers' rights in a tolerant and respectful manner.
