What has the Welsh Government done to support the installation of new Changing Places Toilets in Wales?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 11/10/2022

Through the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017, the Welsh Government has sought to improve provision of and access to toilets for public use by requiring each local authority in Wales to produce and publicise a Local Toilets Strategy. Through these strategies, local authorities have been required to take undertake a needs assessment of their communities and set out how best to meet those needs, which includes provision of fully accessible toilets and Changing Places.

The provision of toilets in publicly accessible buildings, such as libraries or cafes, is covered by the building regulations. This applies where building work is undertaken and includes the provision of accessible toilets. We have consulted on increasing the provision of Changing Places Toilets in publicly accessible buildings above relevant size thresholds.

It is my intention to publish a revision to Approved Document M (Access to and use of buildings) covering Changing Places Toilets later this year.
