What is the Welsh Government doing to encourage tree planting in cities?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 12/10/2022

As part of the work on the National Forest for Wales programme we actively encourage urban planting.

We are working with Keep Wales Tidy to fund the eco-schools project, through which 100 schools will this year receive 60-100 trees to plant.

Our Community Woodlands Scheme is supporting people across Wales to create places for nature in their own communities, including the enhancement of community woodlands in urban areas.

In 2020-21, we funded the first 5 Tiny Forests in Wales, and funded tree planting at 22 schools which otherwise have limited access to green spaces. Each site was carefully selected to provide maximum impact for nature and urban communities. We are committed to creating more Tiny Forests across Wales.

Through our My Tree Our Forest scheme we are working alongside the Woodland Trust to give every household across Wales the opportunity to collect a tree to plant in their garden, whether urban or rural.

We are also delivering the Woodland Investment Grant to create, restore and enhance woodlands in Wales. This scheme provides support to landowners and managers across Wales, including Local Authorities for urban areas.
