What provision exists in Wales, via initial teacher education and/or continuing professional development, for the education workforce to be adequately and ethically trained in the use of data?

During their careers all teachers should strive to meet the sustained highly-effective practice descriptors of the professional standards for teaching and leadership. There are specific descriptors that relate to recording and reporting data, engaging in action research and using research findings.

In order to support practitioners, there is a range of professional learning available via education consortia, universities and other providers.

Specifically in this area, professional learning on undertaking enquiry would include ethical considerations on use of data for research. The digital professional learning journey also includes support on use of data, and the aspiring heads programme includes provision on the use of data and how to use it to help inform decisions.

Schools should also be ensuring that all staff receive regular training on the requirements of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
