How does the Welsh Government plan to protect Welsh consumers’ right to choose whether or not they buy food products that contain certain ingredients further to the UK Government’s plans to remove genetic engineering techniques from the scope of genetic modification regulations and labelling requirements?

Answered by Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd | Answered on 18/08/2022

I and the Minister for Climate Change have formally written to the UK Government, in June of this year regarding their Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding ) Bill.

The Welsh Government continues to engage with DEFRA and the Devolved Administrations to discuss proposals in relation to the removal of gene editing techniques from the scope of genetic modification regulations and labelling requirements.

Protecting Welsh Consumers’ rights to choose whether they want to purchase food products which contain gene edited ingredients will be at the forefront of those discussions.
