What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the first Census 2021 results?

Answered by Minister for Finance and Local Government | Answered on 06/07/2022

The Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) 2021 Census population and household estimates for Wales were laid in the Senedd (in both English and in Welsh) on Tuesday 28 June. I issued a Ministerial Written Statement welcoming this first release of Census data. At the same time as the ONS’ publication, the Welsh Government published a statistical bulletin summarising the main points for Wales.

Officials from Knowledge and Analytical Services in the Welsh Government participated in the quality assurance process for the census estimates. All local authorities in Wales were also invited to take part in the quality assurance process for their own local area for the first time.

The Welsh Government will continue to work closely with the ONS as it publishes further information from the 2021 Census. This includes the ONS’ planned research into how the Census estimates compare with other ONS population estimates later this year.
