What steps is the Government taking to ensure that primary school catchment reviews in Usk are progressing forward?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 28/06/2022

Local authorities are the admission authorities for community schools and voluntary controlled schools and school governing bodies are the admission authorities for voluntary aided and foundation schools. Admission authorities are responsible for setting admission arrangements, including any oversubscription criteria, which may include catchment areas.

Any review of primary school catchment areas in Usk is therefore a matter for Monmouthshire Council rather than the Welsh Government.

When undertaking their school admission functions local authorities and admission authorities must comply with the School Admissions Code. It should be noted that admission arrangements must be consulted on between 1 September and 1 March, and set by 15 April, of the school year (the ‘determination year’) beginning two years before the school year in which the arrangements will apply.  Admission authorities must then determine their admission arrangements by 15 April in the determination year.
