Further to the written statement on 10 May 2022, will the Counsel General confirm what length of prison sentence the Welsh Government would like to reduce to with regards to the short sentence?

Answered by Counsel General and Minister for the Constitution | Answered on 23/05/2022

Short custodial sentences are highly disruptive for individuals without presenting sufficient opportunity for effective rehabilitative work. The individual circumstances of the crime, the victim and the offender will always be relevant to individual sentencing decisions, but the Welsh Government shares the view expressed until 2019 by the UK Government that in general, a reduction in short custodial sentences will reduce reoffending and therefore will reduce crime.
