What discussions has the Welsh Government had with the chief constable of Dyfed Powys Police regarding the decriminalisation of drugs?

Answered by Minister for Social Justice | Answered on 23/05/2022

The legal classification of drugs remains the responsibility of the UK Government and we believe classification should be considered on a UK-wide basis.

No discussions have taken place between Welsh Government and the Mayor of London regarding the decriminalisation of cannabis.

Chief Constable Lewis of Dyfed Powys Police recently gave his views on the decriminalisation of drugs in the media. These are CC Lewis’ personal views, and neither I, the Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, or our officials have had discussions with CC Lewis on this subject.

Our focus remains on making the strong case for devolution of policing, and only then should we consider how to take forward issues such as this.
