What educational materials does the Welsh Government produce on the topic of farm and rural safety, and the associated cost?

Answered by Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd | Answered on 23/03/2022

Since April 2021, the Welsh Government has directly commissioned a range of educational materials for use by students in schools, colleges and universities as well as farmers, at a total cost of £110,416.

Materials for students include resource to support the teaching and learning of specific courses; short video clips of experts within the agricultural industry, in which they explain the H&S principles of specific tasks; and a resource for agriculture students who are specifically concentrating on improving their understanding of business concepts in a context of running and managing a farm.

Included within this total is also the Welsh Government’s funding to the Wales Farm Safety Partnership for the production of Farm Safety information booklets aimed at farmers; case studies and press adverts highlighting the dangers on farm and how to implement safe working practices; and promotional materials including farm waning signs and fliers on driving ATVs.

Welsh Government has also committed a further £104,297 on developing educational resources to support the teaching and learning of agriculture. Some are directly linked to farm safety, whilst others may touch on this topic as part of a wider resource. The material is currently in development.
