How many primary schools allow pupils to pre-order their school meal either before or during that day's registration period?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 22/03/2022

The Welsh Government does not hold specific information on how many primary schools allow pupils to pre-order their school meal. The WLGA does not collect data on specific school practices either. However, exploratory work carried out by the WLGA shows that in maintained primary schools, there are five different practices currently being used across local authorities in Wales:

  • Pre-order at morning registration in the classroom – 9 Local Authorities
  • A combination of pre-order at morning registration in the classroom OR parent order online – 6 Local Authorities
  • Point of service, therefore not pre-ordering – 2 Local Authorities
  • Pre order at morning registration OR at point of service – 2 Local Authorities
  • A combination of pre-order at morning registration OR parent order online OR point of service – 1 Local Authority

The system is unclear in the remaining 2 Local Authorities.
