How is the Welsh Government engaging with the UK Government on the issue of tidal energy?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 17/03/2022

I and my officials are in regular contact with the UK Government about energy matters. We supported the industry to successfully lobby the UK Government to provide funding for tidal stream projects as part of Auction Round 4 for Contract for Difference, and ensure there will be annual auction rounds for the sector going forward.

We were disappointed the UK Government did not act on the findings of the independent Hendry Review in 2016, which recommended proceeding with a pathfinder project.

The First Minister has continued to press the case for the UK Government to provide funding for innovative marine energy technologies, including for tidal range projects. We will continue to make the case for marine energy, especially as energy security becomes a more urgent issue.
