What steps is the Government taking to ensure that blind/partially sighted people can use COVID tests independently?

Live video support provided by NHS trained call agents using the Be My Eyes app is available to anyone who requires assistance with home testing. It may be of particular benefit to blind or partially sighted customers, or those who require visual assistance, but everyone is eligible. The service can be accessed by calling the NHS 119 helpline.

Initially Be My Eyes agents only provided support for home PCR testing. However, following a recent pilot, the service has been extended to provide support for testing with rapid Lateral Flow Devices (LFDs).

The pilot established that although agents were able to provide a significant degree of assistance, people with severe sight loss still had difficulty depositing the required number of sample drops into the lateral flow test device. As a result, the service carries the caveat that people with severe sight loss may find it easier to get a friend or family member to help them.

Officials will monitor the service and consider what other steps may be taken to assist blind/partially sighted people.
