What percentage of women in Wales have received the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 31/01/2022

Based on data previously published through the Public Health Wales National COVER Surveillance Scheme, an estimated 248,000 girls and women have received at least one dose of HPV vaccine as part of the schools vaccination programme which commenced in 2008. The women included in these historical reports would have reached the ages of between 13 and 30 years as at Sep 2021. This gives an approximate coverage of 80% of those eligible for the vaccine at the time reports were published.

These figures may not reflect the current Wales-resident population and do not account for any population movement or deaths that have occurred since time of publication. The figures also do not include data for catch-up campaigns delivered outside of schools through general practices or vaccines given as part of the selective risk based programme for older females delivered through sexual health services.

According to WG StatsWales, the 2020 mid-year population estimate for females in Wales is 1,606,062.
