How much financial support has Welsh Government provided to the Welsh Rugby Union since the start of the pandemic?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip | Answered on 14/01/2022

The Welsh Government provided the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and the four regions with a grant of £13.5m in March 2021 from the Spectator Sports Survival Fund.  The WRU also received £577,000 in July 2020 from the Economic Resilience Fund.  Community rugby clubs across Wales have also been supported by various sources of Welsh Government funding, including Sport Wales’ Be Active Wales Fund.

The WRU has also received funding from the Welsh Government, through Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, for reinstatement costs, and consequential costs and losses, linked to the occupation of the stadium for the field hospital.  These costs are not publicly available due to contractual restrictions.
