What steps is the Welsh Government taking to support schools in their transition away from the use of plastic utensils, prior to the introduction of a single-use plastic ban?

Funded by the Welsh Government, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) Cymru is supporting public bodies in Wales to embed sustainability into their procurement strategies and activities. Advice, guidance and practical support on the minimisation of single use plastics has been provided across the Welsh Public sector.

While the procurement of catering consumables is currently a matter for individual schools, with advice from WRAP and officials from the Welsh Government’s Commercial Delivery Service, a Procurement Framework with sustainable options has been set up by Local Authorities.

Additionally, ahead of the proposed bans coming into force, a guidance booklet will be published. This will be available to individuals and public and private sector organisations, including schools.
