What steps is the Welsh Government taking to facilitate local authority provision of woodland burial sites?

Answered by Minister for Finance and Local Government | Answered on 02/12/2021

The Welsh Government is not actively seeking to influence local authority decisions on woodland burial sites.

Decisions on whether to introduce schemes on woodland burials would be for individual burial ground providers. These include local authorities, community and town councils, private companies and religious bodies.

There are no specific statutory provisions governing the establishment of natural burial grounds.  New burial grounds of any kind will be subject to planning consents and environmental law, in the same way as any other land development.
