Will the Minister explain why the appointment of an Equality and Human Rights Commissioner is taking so long and when an appointment is expected?

Answered by Minister for Social Justice | Answered on 29/11/2021

As explained in my response to WQ83906, the appointment of the Equality and Human Rights Commission Wales Board member, and Welsh Member and Chair of the Wales Committee, is an appointment made by the UK Government under the portfolio of the Secretary of State for International Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities.

The process for the appointment is set out here:

There have been discussions between Welsh Ministers and UK Government to ensure Welsh Ministers were satisfied that the process has taken sufficient account of the distinct character and needs of Wales and to ensure as diverse a field of candidates as possible.  This is an important post and the selection process is now at an advanced stage.
