What assessment has Welsh Government made of the impact of minimum alcohol pricing on people in deprived areas?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing | Answered on 22/11/2021

An evaluation of minimum unit pricing (MUP) has been commissioned by the Welsh Government. Baseline data collections for the evaluation were completed prior to implementation of the legislation and reports from those studies are being developed. The data collection for the first follow-up is due to be completed by October 2022, with interim progress reports from those studies to be available by March 2023. A final follow-up data collection is due to take place in autumn 2023, with the final report, which will include conclusions about the effectiveness of the legislation, available in late 2024. Differences in outcomes for different groups (including socio-economic groups) will be identified where data allows. This evaluation will inform the report on the operation and effect of the Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018, which is required to be laid before the Senedd at the end of a five-year review period.
