Will the Minister give consideration to increasing the annual road safety grant to Powys County Council, given the rates of serious injuries on its roads?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 22/10/2021

The Road Safety Grant is provided to local authorities to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on roads in Wales.

We have allocated £106,810 of Road Safety Grant revenue funding to Powys County Council for 2021-22, which is the third highest amount allocated to local authorities across Wales.  Revenue funding is allocated on a formula basis using the latest population numbers in Wales (60%) and casualty numbers of those killed or seriously injured (40%).

For Capital funding, local authorities were invited to submit up to two applications.  However, it is for each local authority to determine their priority schemes that they wish to put forward.  Powys County Council submitted one bid this year and I can confirm that we’ve funded £20,000 for a route study/ improvements relating to A4215 Libanus – Defynnog Class 1 Road.

Local authorities will be invited to bid for funding for 2022/23 in the new year.
