Will the Minister provide a breakdown of the number of staff paid the real living wage in the Welsh social care sector?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Services | Answered on 20/09/2021

The Welsh Government does not hold data on the number of staff paid the Real Living Wage in the Welsh social care sector.  The social care sector is complex with hundreds of different employers, the majority of which are in the independent and voluntary sector.

Research commissioned by the Welsh Government from the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care at the University of South Wales[1] has highlighted the variance of pay scales and terms and conditions in social care across the public, independent and voluntary sector.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publishes a range of data on earning in Wales by sector, the number of jobs paid below minimum wage by region and on the number and proportion of employees earnings below the real living wage, including in Wales.  This data can be found on the ONS website.
