What consultation has the Welsh Government undertaken with trailer manufacturers in developing its rules relating to improvements to animal welfare in transport?

We are working with the UK Government and other administrations to consider how the protection of animal welfare during transport can be strengthened. A Summary of Responses and Government Response to the joint UK Government and Welsh Government consultation on Improvements to Animal Welfare in Transport was published in August. We share the view animals should only be transported when necessary and journey durations should be minimised. Evidence has shown long journeys can cause animals’ heat stress, dehydration and physical injuries. We will now work closely with industry, NGOs and other stakeholders on our proposed policies to explore some of the issues and the evidence in more detail, and develop workable solutions which will generate good welfare outcomes.
