What plans does the Welsh Government have for Barnett consequentials arising from increased UK Government spending on grassroots football in England?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip | Answered on 03/09/2021

There are currently no Barnett consequentials arising from the UK Government’s decision to invest in grassroots football in England.  The UK Government’s intention is to use the financial assistance powers in the UK Internal Market Act to determine how the money will be spent in the home nations.

The Welsh Government’s view is that the proposed approach by the UK Government is not appropriate and does not respect the devolution settlement, as sport is clearly an area of devolved competence. We will raise this issue at the next meeting of the Joint Ministerial Sports Cabinet, which is due to take place next month.
