What support is Welsh Government providing for young disabled people who seek to rent or own their own home, in both the public and private housing sector, that meet the needs of each disability?
The Welsh Government provides capital funding and grants to local authorities and housing associations to adapt owner occupied and rented housing in all sectors to meet the needs of disabled people. We support the delivery of over 30,000 adaptations to homes across Wales annually, at a total cost of around £60 million. Each person is assessed individually by an Occupational Therapist or Trusted Assessor to ensure their specific needs are met.
All local housing authorities across Wales are encouraged to maintain accessible housing registers. This enables them to make better and more timely use of adapted and accessible stock.
My officials, with support from Tai Pawb, are currently working with the housing sector, disabled people and other stakeholders to coproduce an accessible housing register standard. The standard will facilitate better understanding of the current level of development of registers in Wales, and principles against which progress can be assessed and measured on a local and national level. Tai Pawb are in the process of reflecting on the findings of research in this area with practitioners and disabled people to develop practice guidance.
