What plans does the Welsh Government have to recommence the use of the Oxford Astra Zenica COVID-19 vaccine for those aged under the age of 40?

With the exception of for individuals who have a contraindication to other vaccines, the Welsh Government has no plans to recommence the use of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccine for those aged under the age of 40 in this phase of the programme.

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is safe and highly effective and we will continue to use it in line with the advice given by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and JCVI.

At this stage all health boards have sufficient supplies of the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines to vaccinate anyone who is eligible but has not yet been vaccinated, regardless of age.  We would urge these people to join the over 2.3m people in Wales who have had their first dose and the 2.1m people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
