Will the Minister provide a breakdown of deaths from confirmed or suspected COVID-19 reported to Care Inspectorate Wales since March 2020, by care home and month?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Services | Answered on 05/08/2021

This information is held by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW). At present CIW publishes information fortnightly about Covid-19 in care homes, including deaths, on a local authority basis only.

The latest release is available at: https://gov.wales/notifications-care-inspectorate-wales-related-covid-19-adult-care-homes-1-march-2020-28-july-2021

Throughout the pandemic, CIW has encouraged care providers to be open with people in their care and their families. Most providers ensure information about the circumstance of people’s deaths is shared appropriately.

CIW has reviewed this position and will be making arrangements to publish this information. Care Inspectorate Scotland and CQC also publish this data.

No conclusion can be drawn about the quality of care provided by a care home based on the number of deaths reported to CIW, particularly given the potential influence of variable factors, including rates of local community transmission, size of the care home, and the age and health and care needs of the people living there.
