What discussions has the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales had with farming representatives regarding phosphates in Special Areas of Conservation since the changes to Natural Resources Wales guidance in January 2021?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 28/07/2021

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Welsh Government has and continues to engage with representatives from the National Famers’ Union of Cymru (NFU Cymru) and the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) via the Wales Land Management Forum (WLMF) Sub Group on Agricultural Pollution. Other bodies represented on this group include the Tenant Farmers Association (TFA), the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). For a complete list of representatives please see NRW’s website: Natural Resources Wales / The Wales Land Management Forum sub group on agricultural pollution.

NRW provided a detailed presentation to the WLMF Sub Group on phosphate levels and guidance in areas Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) on 22 March. The Welsh Government and NRW will continue to draw on the expertise of the WLMF Sub Group to help inform the strategic, tactical and regulatory response to address phosphate issues in Wales’ SAC rivers.
