Will the Minister confirm whether the Welsh Government has undertaken a nation-wide, up-to-date inventory of war memorials in Wales?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip | Answered on 14/07/2021

The Welsh Government has not undertaken its own inventory of all the war memorials in Wales as this information is collated by other organisations.

The Imperial War Museum maintains the War Memorials Register, which is a comprehensive database of war memorials across the UK. It has 3,766 records in Wales. The register continues to grow with information supplied by volunteers and members of the public.

Cadw supported the War Memorials Trust in establishing War Memorials Online. This provides an opportunity for the public to upload images and log information about the condition of memorials across Wales and the rest of the UK.

Those war memorials in Wales which are listed (around 230) are on Cof Cymru, Cadw’s online database of designated historic assets in Wales. Many of these are free-standing structures, including traditional war memorials, but some are other forms of commemoration such as memorial gates, plaques and buildings.
