What is the Welsh Government doing to support people living with motor neurone disease in Wales?
Welsh Government recognises the significant challenges that people living with motor neurone disease face and the additional impact that Covid has had on carers, friends and families.
The Neurological Conditions delivery plan (https://gov.wales/sites/default/files/publications/2019-02/neurological-conditions-delivery-plan-july-2017.pdf) sets out the Welsh Government’s vision for people living with neurological conditions in Wales and the Neurological Conditions Implementation Group continues to drive forward improvements in quality and outcomes for all neurological conditions including motor neurone disease.
Welsh Government provides funding to a number of health boards and hospices around Wales that provide services and clinics for those living with motor neurone disease. Hywel Dda University Health Board and Paul Sartori (PSF) have supported a total of 15 patients living with motor neurone disease over the last two years through the hands on care hospice at home service and their Standby service. (Standby patients are visited at home by one of the hospices nurses and given information about PSF and other services. They are also given a 24 hour contact emergency number).
Many of these patients and/or family will have also used PSF’s physiotherapy, counselling and complementary therapy services.
