Will the Minister make a statement on the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in town and cities on streets that are not close to schools or shops?
You can find our response to all of the recommendations from the 20mph Task Force Group here.
The 20mph trial areas are outlined in my Written Statement of 17 February. These trials will capture data about compliance, casualties, active travel, as well as economic, environmental and health impacts and will continue post implementation for a period of at least five years. We will be able to use the lessons learned to take forward best practice as we continue to develop guidance for Setting Local Speed Limits in Wales.
The 20mph trials will start to go live this month and will continue to be rolled out over the rest of this year. All residential streets will be subject to a 20mph speed limit by default, however, an exceptions process will be applied to major routes through settlements and an assessment based on pedestrian activity to determine if the 20mph speed limit is still applicable.
