Will the Minister make a statement on the 50 mph speed limit on the M4 at Newport?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 11/06/2021

The permanent 50mph limit with average speed enforcement between junctions 24 and 28 on the M4 went live on 15 March. The limit is being closely monitored by Go Safe during the bedding-in period. This is allowing for a full systems and enforcement check to take place giving motorists time to get used to the new speed limit.

The change is intended to:

  • help manage congestion issues along this stretch of the M4
  • improve journey times and provide smoother traffic flows
  • reduce the risk of accidents
  • improve air quality by reducing emission levels
