What is being done in Wales to introduce an NHS app along the lines of that being used in England?
Welsh Government and NHS Wales have already introduced My Health Online (MHOL). This is available to members of the public who are registered with a GP Surgery in Wales, and provides access to a number of services electronically, such as booking GP appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions, and providing access to information on allergies and medication. Although MHOL does not currently offer an app, a mobile version of the website does provide the same level of functionality on mobile devices as it does on desktop browsers.
The long-term plan for Health and Social Care, A Healthier Wales, commits to provide an enhanced digital platform for citizens which will give people greater control and enable them to become more active participants in their own health and well-being. Welsh Government has confirmed funding of £5.4m from the Digital Priorities Investment Fund this year for the Digital Services for Patients and the Public programme. This programme includes a replacement app for MHOL, and is currently in the procurement stage. This will enable patients to contribute to and share information about their health and care, manage appointments and communications with professionals, and work with others to co-ordinate the care and treatment they need. This platform will build upon lessons learned from the Covid pandemic response, in both Wales and across the UK.
