When will the register of retailers of tobacco and nicotine products, as required by the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017, come into force and be implemented?

Answered by Minister for Mental Health, Well-being and the Welsh Language | Answered on 10/12/2020

The Welsh Government remains committed to introducing the requirements as set out in Chapter 2 of Part 3 of the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017 relating to the register of retailers of tobacco and nicotine products. However, our response to the coronavirus pandemic has impacted on the resources available to support this work. Currently there is no definitive timetable in place for the introduction of the register of retailers of tobacco and nicotine products.

We have, however, prioritised implementing Chapter 1 of Part 3 of the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017, which will extend the smoke-free requirements in Wales. The legislation will include the requirement for hospital grounds, school grounds, public playgrounds and outdoor care settings for children to be smoke-free from 1 March 2021.
