What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the current levels of seafood landings into Welsh ports and will the Welsh Government consider setting an ambitious target once Wales leaves the EU Common Fisheries Policy?

Seafood landings are monitored and assessed by mainly statutory means requiring declarations by industry. Other non-statutory collection of landings data completes the picture across Welsh ports.

Future landings into Welsh ports will be dependent on many factors, as they are today. One major factor will be the outcome of the ongoing Fisheries Framework Agreement negotiations between the UK and EU as a result of the UK leaving the CFP. The UK position is for a greater share of quotas of fish around the UK and I anticipate a Welsh share of any increase. Until the negotiations conclude the precise effects on Welsh seafood landings are difficult to predict.
