Will the Minister confirm the timetable for the publication of the new relationships and sex education syllabus in Wales?

Answered by Minister for Education | Answered on 14/08/2020

Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) will be a statutory element of the new curriculum for learners aged 3 – 16 from September 2022.

Provision is also made within the Curriculum and Assessment (Wales) Bill for the Welsh Ministers to issue an RSE Code. The RSE code will describe the high level mandatory learning to be undertaken by pupils and children in the element of RSE.

Earlier this year, I established an RSE Working Group to co-construct the development RSE statutory guidance to support this important area of learning and develop the RSE Code. The Faith/BAME Community Involvement Group will also be supporting this work.

The draft guidance and code will be consulted on later this year and we plan to then publish the statutory guidance in spring 2021.
