What assessment has the Minister made of the impact of shielding on the mental health of those being asked to shield and how does the Minister intend to mitigate any adverse impacts on the mental health of shielded people?

We continue to monitor the impact of the restrictions on mental health and well-being to inform our approach, for instance, through the Public Health Wales Public Engagement Survey. There have been a number of studies around the UK that have looked at people’s mental health, and others that have directly sought the views of shielded patients. There are very limited numbers of studies comparing the effect of shielding with the wider population, which is relevant as everyone has been subjected to restrictions in travel and meeting people.

In the latest letters to patients required to shield, the Chief Medical Officer provided specific advice to support people to protect their mental well-being during this period. The letter also signposted people to a range of support including the CALL mental health advice line and information online.

The latest shielding advice is that providing social distancing is maintained, people who have been asked to shield can exercise outdoors and meet other households outdoors. From 6July people who are shielding will also be able to be part of an extended household.

This advice reflects the continuing need for those who are shielding to take precautions but also helps to protect mental health through easing restrictions to allow for exercise, enjoying the outdoors and seeing loved ones.
