What guidance is being provided to employers to require sick notes from employees who are within the suboptimal group of vulnerable people who have been told to shield for 12 weeks as protection from the coronavirus?

Answered by Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales | Answered on 23/04/2020

If a person is in the shielded group and has received a letter from the chief medical officer asking them to adopt shielding measures, they should contact their employer and arrange for a copy of the letter to be shown to their employer.

They should not go to their normal place of work while they are shielding. They can work from home for the 12-week period if they are able to.

They do not need to get a fit note from their GP.

Statutory Sick Pay and the associated guidance is a matter for the UK Government. The guidance can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19/guidance-for-employers-and-businesses-on-coronavirus-covid-19#sick-pay
