Will the Minister commit to postponing local authority by-elections, such as that due to be held in the Castle ward in Swansea on 9 April 2020, given the current coronavirus outbreak?

Answered by Minister for Housing and Local Government | Answered on 27/03/2020

The Welsh Government is working to ensure that primary legislation is in place to enable all by-elections to be postponed. The safety of staff, voters and candidates is paramount.

The UK Government has introduced emergency legislation which includes provisions to ensure by-elections for the Senedd, county and county borough councils and town and community councils in Wales can be postponed.

Welsh Government officials are in contact with returning officers to keep them informed of the situation.
