What assessment has the Welsh Government made in order to find out whether there is a legal barrier to giving the Assembly a Welsh-only name?

The Welsh Government’s decision to support the successful amendments to the Senedd and Elections (Wales) Bill in relation to the name of the Assembly was based on a number of reasons. In particular, the principle of accessibility of the law supports adopting a name in Welsh and in English. The Government also takes the view, that as a bilingual nation we ought to have a bilingual name for the institution that we operate within.

However, it is also important to note that whilst the formal statutory name would be bilingual, it is the preference of the Welsh Government that our parliament should be referred to by the shortened title ‘Senedd’ in certain enactments and in everyday use, and it will be Welsh Government policy to use this term generally wherever possible.
