Will the Welsh Government provide the number of people on a waiting list for social housing by each local authority for the past year?

Answered by Minister for Housing and Local Government | Answered on 05/11/2019

The Welsh Government does not collect data on the number of people on a common housing register at a national or local authority level. Local authorities are responsible for assessing and meeting the housing needs of their local population. These needs will vary across a broad spectrum; ranging from those who are housed and wish to move to a new location through to individuals who have no place to live and may even be sleeping rough.

In managing a common housing register, a local authority will apply a range of criteria based on the applicant’s unique circumstances and wider local priorities.

The Code of Guidance for Local Authorities on the Allocation of Accommodation and Homelessness is issued by the Welsh Government under the provisions of the 1996 Housing Act. The Code supports authorities to identify and balance different priorities and encourages the development of common housing registers between local authorities and housing associations.
