Will the Counsel General outline expenditure incurred since the start of December 2018 by the Welsh Government’s legal services department on the coroner’s inquest into the death of Carl Sargeant, excepting expenditure on the judicial review but including anticipated future costs committed for the resumed hearing?

Answered by Counsel General | Answered on 11/07/2019

The expenditure that has been incurred by the Welsh Government in relation to the inquest in respect of the death of Carl Sargeant, since the end of December 2018 and including the resumed inquest which reconvened on Monday 8th July 2019, is estimated at £26,513.40 (inclusive of VAT).

The initial part of the inquest took place between the 26th and 30th November 2018. The inquest was part heard and reconvened on Monday the 8th July 2019. The reconvened inquest is listed for 4 days.

The figure is estimated, as Counsel’s fees may change subject to the length of the inquest and the matters arising during the inquest which might necessitate additional work.

The costs incurred in respect of the inquest prior to December 2018 are addresses in a separate Written Assembly Question.

The sum noted above, does not include the Judicial Review costs which followed the initial part of the inquest.
