In relation to the written statement on 5th June regarding the M4, will the Minister state whether dedicated on call recovery vehicles have been historically in place to support traffic officers on the M4, and if so, how many, and if not, why?

A dedicated on call service has not been used on the M4 previously for ‘normal’ operations. Our Trunk Road service is delivered to a safety baseline in line with available budgets – a recovery contract also could be resource intensive in terms of the follow up administration (vehicle storage etc). Up until now, we have worked closely with the Police to utilise their contract but will trial this commitment based on similar trials on the A55 in north Wales.
