How many radiologists will be trained at the National Imaging Academy Wales in the academic year 2019/20?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 23/05/2019

The South Wales Radiology training has been established into the Academy model, with the whole South Wales Radiology Specialist Training scheme transferred to the Academy model on 1st August 2018. At the last academic intake in 2018 there were 51 Radiologist trainees on South Wales scheme, which exceeded the threshold for hospital training capacity. This included 14 trainees in first year cohort (including a second year part time trainee who started 2017 but is on a contemporaneous PhD at CUBRIC). From 1st August 2019, the number of trainee radiologists has increased to 59, with 13 new trainees starting and others qualifying to become Consultants or extending their training in specialist centres. The actual time spent by the Radiologist trainees at the Academy is dependent on teaching, training and specialty training rotation and can vary through the year.
