What discussions has the Welsh Government held with small businesses in Ammanford and Pembroke following the closure of Santander banks in their communities?

Answered by Minister for Economy and Transport | Answered on 01/02/2019

Banking regulation is non-devolved and is the responsibility of the UK Government. It is the UK Government who has the powers to regulate the industry to ensure that vital banking services are available to the community on the high street either by the traditional banks or increasingly through services transitioned to the Post Office.

Decisions on branch closures are entirely commercial matters for the banks. However, officials do meet regularly with the banks to discuss a range of issues, including their branch closure programmes.  The Welsh Government consistently raises the matter of ensuring the banks take into account the impact of closing a branch on the individuals and businesses the branch serves within that community.

Business Wales is available to provide information, guidance and support to any business impacted by the announcement of Santander branch closures in Wales and I encourage them to make contact.
