Following the announcement that there were 2,300 dog attacks on postal workers reported last year, what steps is the Cabinet Secretary taking to work with local authorities and the relevant sector organisations to reduce such incidents?

Dog attacks can ruin lives and are avoidable if dog owners ensure they are in control of their animals and are responsible owners at all times. The promotion of responsible ownership is a key priority for the Welsh Government and the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework Group.

I meet regularly with Julie Morgan AM and her colleagues regarding the issue of dangerous dogs and the Communication Workers Union campaigns and latest statistics are shared in a timely manner.  I have to say that some of the detail is both shocking to read and see.  This is today’s reality for some postal workers but we must try and change the future by raising awareness across Wales.

My officials work in partnership with Local Authorities and Third Sector organisations to ensure the Welsh Government’s priorities are included in their work programmes.  They are also members of groups such as the Animal Welfare Network for Wales and the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG).Both groups are made up of animal welfare organisations, trade associations and veterinary bodies and undertake valuable projects and campaigns.   , some endorsed by the Welsh Government, covering issues such as responsible dog ownership.
